We have all heard the adage: “an image is worth a thousand words”, and it’s true. Sometimes, the photos we take or receive from others remind us just how extraordinary a destination, and Turkiye, really is.

We were fortunate to receive a collection of spectacular aerial photographs recently from Tarik, a talented drone pilot and superyacht crew member, who visited Dalyan during a recent itinerary along the Turkish coast. With his permission, we have used many of his images on our website and in this article, including the shot above of a riverboat heading down the Dalyan delta and the one below of the Kaunos rock tombs carved high into the cliffs overlooking the Dalyan River. Dating back to the 4th century BC, these ancient Lycian tombs are impressive from the water, but this aerial perspective reveals their scale and setting in a way few get to appreciate.

Carved high into the cliffs above the Dalyan River, the Kaunos rock tombs are among the most recognisable sights in southwest Türkiye. Dating to the 4th century BC, their elaborate, temple-like façades are clearly visible from the river tour and were built for members of the ancient city’s elite. They’re especially impressive in the late-afternoon light, when the stonework’s detail becomes more pronounced.

Kaunos has far more than the tombs visible from the river. Situated a short distance behind the tombs is the main archaeological site, where you can explore the remains of its theatre, Roman baths, temples and ancient harbour. Once an important trading centre, Kaunos gradually lost its direct access to the sea as the delta changed and evolved. Known locally as İztuzu Plajı, this long sandy beach separates the Dalyan Delta from the Mediterranean and is an important nesting site for endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Seasonal protection measures help safeguard nesting areas, making this a particularly interesting stop for guests interested in marine conservation. At the far end of the beach, the DEKEMER turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre is also available for visitors. Beach access and activities are strictly regulated, especially during the nesting season.

Formany,the journey through the Dalyan Delta is worth enjoying in its own right. Narrow channels weave between towering reeds, with kingfishers, herons and other birdlife often spotted along the banks. A private riverboat lets you explore the quieter waterways and appreciate the landscape without rushing between sightseeing stops.

Dalyan town makes a pleasant lunch stop, with a wide range of restaurants overlooking the river and the Kaunos rock tombs beyond. Most menus feature fresh fish, local meze, and traditional Turkish dishes. It’s also a chance to sample local blue crab, which the area is famed for when it is in season. Guests can browse the small shops or simply enjoy a coffee or drink beside the water before heading back to the yacht.

Unlike Göcek or Bodrum, Dalyan has no marina or port facilities for superyachts. Instead, Ekincik Bay is a popular anchorage for yachts exploring the Dalyan area, with its sheltered setting and easy access to the local riverboat excursions.

Between Marmaris and Göcek, Ekincik Bay is a popular stop on a Turkish Riviera cruising itinerary, especially for guests who want to visit Dalyan. Its surrounding hills offer some protection from prevailing winds, but captains should note that it gets busy during high season with blue cruisers and other yachts, so space can be limited; please ASK US for advice.
